Twin Celebrations

Friends of ours are expecting twin baby girls (!!!!) and this Saturday we gathered to share a few drinks, laughs and a set of wipe warmers.

I find one thing to be true at every couples' shower we've ever taken part in: If there's a chance women may be discussing childbirth, centerpieces or the finer points of baby pink versus ice pink, the men will huddle together, cold beers in hand, and speak only of signing day and the latest inappropriate YouTube making it's way around the Web.

Evidence:

Only women would hang the decorations in front of the flat screen, they said.

Our second 'celebration' of the weekend was to watch the Super Bowl at a friends house.  Shh!  Don't tell Michael, he thought it was a party for his birthday.  The kids spent the majority of the time playing dress-up and ignoring the totally awesome commercials that the Super Bowl is all about.

If nothing else, Ella has a future selling real estate in Boca.  She was working that cell like a pro.

Spring in January, Part Two

We stayed closer to home today, and hit the park across the street.  Something tells me there will be another spin around the playground before dinner.

Ella found a friend at the park today - way better than playing with a stinky brother.

Seriously.  January 30.

Michael, seen here rocking his bacon and eggs crossbones, was not most pleased to be leaving the park to head home for n-a-p time.

Spring in January

Three weeks ago I was posting photos of the kids in snow.  Today, Ella was in a sundress at the park.  It's so bittersweet knowing it won't last, but man this weekend's been gorgeous.

The zoo was hoppin' on Saturday morning.  Had to include this shot - looks to me like a family of Sophie doll giraffes.  Apparently the zebras and hippos were sleeping in.

You'll notice as you scroll, we spent a lot of time sticking our heads through plywood walls.

Here is Ella making her very serious Willie B. gorilla face.

Ha!  Couldn't help myself.  This one cracks me up.

Patiently awaiting the start of the carrousel.

Coloring an octopus while we wait for lunch at Six Feet Under.

Michael's monkey face comes out.

I think this next one is my favorite of today's bunch.

On the way home, the kids called Gigi to say "hello!"

Big Night for a Big Boy

Another weekend, another birthday party.  This time we went to the Young Chef's Academy in Toco Hills and about half-way through, I was really wishing I knew about this place back in early December.  The girls had so much fun making the kind of mess in the kitchen that usually makes me cringe.

Ella was too busy practicing measuring out her flour (scoop, chop, scrape!) that she wouldn't look my way.  Not that that's unusual or anything.

I'd say the low point came when Ella learned she was expected to actually eat the pink pizza that she just lovingly made.  Have I mentioned neither of our children like to eat pizza?  They may be alien kids, ala Men in Black.

Things quickly turned around when she decided to go ahead and sneak a bite of her cupcake.

If you've been wondering where the title for this post came from, here it is.  We've been dancing around it for weeks (months, whatever) and tonight is the night Michael is giving up his binkie habit.  He's not had them overnight for, oh, 18 months or more, but they've been a staple at naptime on the weekends, in the car and in restaurants.  As a big boy of two years, he has agreed to our plan.  The Binkie Fairy arrives tonight to pick up the box of binkies Michael has placed near the fireplace.  In return, she promises to take the binkies to new babies who need them, and will leave him a present in the morning.  Phase One of this transition went off without a hitch.  We'll have to keep you on how the morning goes.

Pardon the pink.  It was all I had in a pinch for my big boy.

Just One Day Left

We're almost there.  School will be open again on Tuesday - unless a major flood, power outage or grasshopper outbreak hits the city, I suppose.  I think Wes is looking forward to it almost as much as I am.  Kidding, of course.

P.S. - We wish Gigi a very happy birthday today!

I resorted to allowing the kids to jump on the bed in order to get some pictures of them this afternoon.  Would you believe it still took a little coaxing on my part?  Kids these days.

No, you're not crazy...the next two pictures are the same one, twice.  I can't decide which crop I like better.   Votes are welcome.

A little 'Ella-tude' seeped out in this next one. And I love it.

Can you tell Michael had vacated the scene at this point?  Again, I need better bribes.

Tonight after coming home from Gigi's birthday dinner, the kids Skyped with their cousins for a little while.  It's always a riot to watch.

Testing my ISO Limits

Since I'm still pretty clueless about how to use flash well, I tested the outter limits of my ISO taking some low-light photos of the kids this week.   Tomorrow, I'm going to try and take some low ISO ones with good morning light if everyone cooperates.  If...

Ella is a baker-extraordinaire with her new EBO.  (That's what they call it in the biz.)

Don't look Mom, I'm RUNNING WITH SCISSORS!

At this point, I believe Michael is wise to the fact that if he poops in the bathtub, they get to migrate over to the big tub in our master bath - which is way more fun, of course.

Chasing my littlest escapee...

Snow Days Two and Three

The fun keeps on going!  Looks like things will warm up enough on Friday to send us all back to work and school.  Too bad for working power, internet connections and conference lines.  This could have been an awesome total staycation.

Snow Day

I have really enjoyed looking through everyone's snow day posts on Facebook today.  Ella woke us up at 6 a.m. ready to go out in the snow.  It's like Santa came all over again.  Unfortunately, I had been staring at the clock at 5:46 a.m. and had just fallen back to sleep.  Yay.  Oh well - it was gorgeous outside.

"But Mom, I don't care that it's 7 a.m., I want to go OUT THERE!"

Rocket would most definitely not approve of this procedure.

This snowball-maker means business.

"Did somene just make fun of my polka-dot mittens?"

Here is Wes, weighing the most important decision of his day.

Christmas at the Farm

Did it really already come and go?  We had such a good time goofing off in Texas over the last week.  One day, the sum total of our plans was to run to Target for pull-ups.  We spent the rest of our time feeding the longhorns, praying the kids wouldn't ride their scooters into something valuable, and generally soaking up Nana and Rocket's hospitality.

I've put up a gallery of photos from the trip (which you can see by CLICKING HERE or by going over to the Galleries tab) and picked out a few of my favorites to post on the blog. For some reason that I'm too lazy today to look into, several of the thumbnails are not showing in the gallery but if you click on the white space, the full-sized image does come up.  Let me know if you're having trouble.

Happy New Year everyone.  Chin chin!

And apparently by "a few of my favorites" I mean "a whole mess of my favorites."  That's how they say it in Texas.

Present-Palooza December Continues

Man, January is going to be a serious let-down for these little ones.  We have some crazy-generous friends and family, then we throw classroom Secret Santas into the mix?  Holiday fun overload.  Oh, and Elizabeth TURNS FIVE tomorrow!  We celebrated with a princess-themed soiree yesterday afternoon and the kids are still on a sugar high. Did I mention what's even better than the presents?  All of the h-u-g-s.  Lots of them.

Get ready: this is another big share.  Twenty-seven photos today, I think.

First up is Michael's classroom party.  His Secret Santa out-did him or herself.  He was already playing with his new LeapPad computer before I could get it out of the box for him.  I can only hope it was a duplicate re-gift or something because there's no way it fit within the dollar limit for the swap!  I don't even know who to send the thank you note to...since it was a secret and all.

Personally, I'm not sure he was a big fan of the hat.  But say "wear this hat and you get Chic-Fil-A nuggets and cake" and the dude is IN.

That evening, we celebrated our "little Manning family" Christmas.  It's a sad attempt to meter out opening all of the gifts, but we do what we can to avoid burn-out.

Wes helped Michael take his remote-control Thomas the Train for a test spin...into Mommy's ankle.

Sunday morning, we hit the ground running.  My two little sous chefs were more than happy to help me stir up some yellow icing and offered to taste-test repeatedly.  Somehow they lost interest when I started icing the second dozen cupcakes.

We took a cooking break to let Ella open her birthday gift from us, along with some companion gifts from Uncle Matt and Aunt Amy.  They came with the greatest homemade card from Kate and Drew - loved it!

Back in the kitchen, Belle is all iced and ready to party.

Despite Wes warning Ella that the Wizard of Oz would be scary, she insisted on watching.  I offered to skip through any scenes with the Wicked Witch but she declined.  When Michael climbed up to watch with her, she valiantly covered his eyes for him while the Witch was on the screen.  He sat there calmly for minutes on end until Ella deemed it safe for him to watch again.

Fighting his nap, Michael tries to keep playing with the new kitchen for just a few more minutes.

Decorations are up.  Craft table is set.  We forgot to line it with electricfied wire to keep the kids out until the party started.

More Wizard of Oz watching after nap time.  It really is a classic, I guess.

The star of the show came sweeping in the door to her own princess-themed music track and didn't stop moving and entertaining until she swept back out the door.  Belle sang, danced, told stories (you know, from when she was making the movie with Gaston and the Beast, and how she was just talking to Ariel and Jasmine the other day), painted faces, made balloon animals and performed magic tricks.  The kids were mesmerized.

Ella climbed into bed this morning still holding the crown she received as the birthday girl.  "Remember Mommy?  This is the one that Belle got for me when she went shopping with all of the other princesses who are her good friends."   Side note, she made a snowman (snow-woman?) at camp today.  On the back, she wrote the snowman's name, "Bell."

Michael kept a safe distance and just watched from the kitchen most of the time.

My favorite part of this picture is Roman standing out front with Bob the Builder gear on, 'directing' the rest of the kids into their places.  Most of those on the stairs are busy yelling "Happy Birthday!"  Maybe there's a good reason photographers usually ask you to say "Cheese!"

Still coming down from their party high, Ella had some fun running around in my boots.  I do believe Michael is carrying around his 14th helping of M&Ms in his cup.

Five years ago tonight, we were checking in at Northside and having one of the most nervous, scared, excited and surreal nights of our lives.  Armed with a shiny new camera and the over-packed hospital bag that all soon-to-be-new-parents bring along, we hoped for the best, secretly mourned for what we knew we'd never have again, and sent up little prayers that the rest would work itself out.  Little did we know what this little girl would bring into our lives and while everyone warned us nothing would ever be the same, no one really succeeded in telling us how words like 'love' and 'family' mean something so completely different after a night like that.  We're just blessed she found us.

The Games Have Begun

This Saturday, I packed in three Christmas celebrations and, in my opinion, there aren't many better ways to spend a weekend day.  Before diving into that day, Ella had her school's Holiday Program on Friday night.  Of thirty-odd children in the show, ours was the only one refusing to get on stage. Happily, she agreed to stand up with her classmates after the first song - though she didn't sing, clap or smile.  Still, I was proud of her.  Stages are definitely not her thing.  Michael sat on his Dad's shoulders and had a good time.  He's ready for his turn up there, I think.

Being silly before the show:

Ella decorated some gingerbread cookies after Michael crashed.  In case you're curious, no, she didn't share with her parents.

The first Christmas celebration: the Manning extended family.  Here is baby Ben.

Michael got a Toy Story dinosaur flash light that roars.  Big hit.

Next up, Christmas celebration number two at our home with Wes' immediate family.  The kids were really on a roll by this time.

Gigi and Gran, supervising the mayhem.

Felipe the flamingo was an instant hit.

Sunday morning, we asked Michael, "What's your monkey's name?"  "Oo oo ah ah."  Duh.

Michael's favorite of the day, his "screwdriver."  Don't call it a drill, but check out his form.  Way to go, dude.

"Yeah.  I've got this."

Happy birthday to Poppa, Gramps and Uncle David!  Nice of the boys to let Ella help with blowing out the sparkler candles.

The third celebration was book club dinner at Agave - delicious!  But you'll have to imagine it, because the camera didn't come along!

Fa la la la la

As promised, here's a post with some Christmas decoration pictures.  It's really a shame we only get to do this once a year.

Michael looks like he's having a serious heart-to-heart with the big man.  I mean Santa, of course.

On (very) rare occasions, I like to make homemade bread.  My annual Christmas swap with college girlfriends gave me a great excuse to take the time to do it this year.  Toasted with a slathering of butter on top, or dipped in olive oil and balsamic...yum.

Ella was teasing me with a toy full of water this morning.  Gladly the spill missed my camera, but hit me all the same.  She was giggling about it for a full five minutes.

The kids didn't seem to mind the 30-something temperatures we had all day today.  Wonder what they were talking about out there by themselves.

a thankful weekend

It's here.  It's begun.  The official holiday season, 2010 edition.

I behaved myself and didn't decorate the house until Friday.  First, we took the kids to see Tangled which was Michael's first movie.  Ella - a veteran movie-goer; this was her second - declared she doesn't like movies with bad guys in them anymore.  Personally, I thought it was cute.

We spent the rest of the weekend eating Thanksgiving leftovers for breakfast as well as shopping, wrapping and spreading general holiday cheer.  I bet we sung Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer at least 40 times.   Hey, it kept the kids awake for the hour-long ride home from the outlets while Wes was in Athens for the game.  And mommy NEEDED those kids to nap when we got home.

"Vroooom" went the bus on Thanksgiving morning.

It's a good thing someone knew how to carve a turkey.

As I was quite the slacker about taking photos on Thanksgiving, I grabbed the kids and the camera for a few minutes tonight.  They were very excited about their fleece-fabulous finds from Old Navy that we picked up today.   I believe Michael is wearing his mittens to bed as I type this.

Santa the Claus!

Two major events have already taken place this week.  First, Ella's gorgeous purple-and-green-striped hand-knit socks arrived from Nana.  Apparently they also work well as mittens - perfectly complemented by a bath towel-cape, of course.

Second, we took the kids to visit Santa today.  Yes, they were heavily coached on what to ask for and yes, they complied.  Good thing since the gifts were ordered a week ago.  Also a good thing they can't read the blog yet.

Ella was so excited - this year, she wrote out her wish list all by herself before seeing 'the big guy.'

Michael, however, was not convinced this was going to be a fun experience.  He did some inital surveying of the situation.

Despite careful counsel from his father, Michael remained to be convinced.

Ella sat up there and talked to Santa like he was a long-lost friend.  Based on the four prior years, we were just excited she didn't explode in tears.

Note Michael's absence.  The one professional shot that was taken includes Michael screaming in tears (taking up his sister's tradition) while Ella sits there and smiles sweetly.   Can't wait to share that one when it arrives.

Enjoying their Santa spoils.  Still no smiles from Michael; he was still recovering a bit.

A post of so-so shots - all that make me smile

It's been over two weeks since posting any photos, so I guess I can't hide it any longer.  I just haven't taken any that are 'blog-worthy' (I need to brush up on my settings, I guess!) BUT I've got several here that make me smile when I see them.

The first: Nana.  Bet she thinks I forgot about taking this series, after Ella insisted she wear her crown.

Next up, Michael having fun at the zoo during the absolutely gorgeous weekend we had.  Monday's weather has completely cancelled that, of course.

The focus is off...the light is terrible...only Ella is looking at me...But they are BOTH SMILING and actually in CLOSE PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER.  (There is the small possibility that Ella earned a snack-size Snickers after this shot was accomplished.)

I exist!

Anyone else with Silly Bands-obsessed kids?

(Above) Ella, caught in the midst of a Bob-the-Builder-moment.  Clearly she knows she's too old for this, but has tossed that aside in the pursuit of pure happiness.

(Below) Tonight we had our first fire and the kids took up residence in front of it while we watched Lady and the Tramp.  Hello Fall.

Trick or Treat

The days are just full.  :)  Nana and Rocket are in town and we've been packing in a lot of Fall fun this weekend.  Tonight will be an even bigger share than last week, between the school's Fall Festival and Halloween.  We had a great time tonight - minus the meltdown when we had to remove Ella's costume make-up - and hope you all have had a great time, too.  My third Baby Ruth of the night really hit the spot.

The 'before' shot. The 'after' shot.

Sometimes, you just can't wait until you get home.

Gigi, helping Michael to recover from yet another scary Halloween costume experience. Poor thing.

The Pumpkin Farm Where We Didn't Buy Pumpkins

Big share tonight!  We went to a pumpkin carving party yesterday where we got that part of the Halloween season out of our systems, so when we went to Washington Farms today, we posed with pumpkins but came home with none.  The kids had a great time - thanks Aunt Kristi and Uncle David for helping to keep them wrangled! - and we brought home more than a little dust and dried corn kernels to dump into the bath, along with the little ones.

First, here is Michael 'helping' to hang some of our Halloween decorations.

Now, onto the pumpkin farm!

At the pig races. Yep. Pig races. They had a totally awesome 'air pillow' that kids (and adults! whoo!) could jump on. Well, Michael didn't think it was totally awesome. He was missing out. "Baby T-ow!" If you look closely, you can see Ella in the baby cow's eye catchlights. Riding Dino. Ella rode Bessie.

Here, Michael's trying to fish out some more rubber duckies to chase down the chute with the water pumps. This entertained for nearly 30 minutes.

The origin of the corn kernels Michael brought home in his pants.

Beautiful Fall Weekend

We did our best to lay low this weekend and spent lots of time outside.  There was an errant mosquito that got the brunt of my right hand, but all-in-all, the bugs were scarce and the sun was warm.

Abby doesn't make enough appearances on the blog so here she is supervising the little ones with me on the front lawn.

Michael, showing off finds from his front lawn nature adventure. Maybe we need to invest in a larger sandbox. You can probably guess, this did not turn out well a few frames later. They made up pretty quickly. Fairly impressive considering the tight quarters. Ella has many talents. Prentending to nap is not one of them.

happy 10.10.10

We had fun ringing in 10.10.10 eve last night, celebrating Elizabeth's 31st/21st birthday.  Today, we hit the zoo and if I wasn't still needing to catch up on sleep, I might remember what we did yesterday.

Fall has definitely arrived and I hope it sticks around for a few weeks more before we have to break out the puffy jackets.  The weather has been amazing here.

Oh yeah, now I remember.  Georgia won!  Michael's jersey was feeling lucky yesterday.  He wore it proudly to the Thumbs Up Diner for breakfast, where the owner is a big UT fan.

Big Monday Post

So many pics to weed through tonight!  This post has a little of everything...a birthday party, a front yard photo shoot, a housewarming party, and the kids' quarterly hair cuts.  Not necessarily in that order.

Here are the Buynowski girls deciding on what pose they were going to do for the camera. Michael, modeling a Nana-original knit hat.

Michael, modeling a Micheal-original facial expression.

My friend Erinn, mom to both the birthday girl, Addison, and birthday boy, Carter. Happy 2nd and 3rd birthday!
